Michael Stanley (1975-2012)
26 September 2012
Lighthouse send our deepest condolences to our colleagues at Modern Art Oxford, who have lost their brilliant director, Michael Stanley, aged just 37. by Honor Harger
As well as being director of Modern Art Oxford, one of the UK’s most important galleries, Michael was also chair of Turning Point South East, the South East region’s chapter of the national Turning Point network, which supported visual art in England.
Lighthouse worked closely with Michael in this capacity, and we were struck by his vibrant leadership, and his outstanding advocacy for visual art nationally. He was a visionary curator, both in his role at Modern Art Oxford and in his previous role as director of MK Gallery in Milton Keynes.
Michael’s death is a terrible blow to the Turning Point South East community, following the loss of Alan Haydon, director of the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, and Matthew Miller, co-director of Fabrica in Brighton, last year.
Michael will be dearly missed by the entire visual arts community. The extraordinary list of shows he was associated with, as listed on the Modern Art Oxford website, are testament to his standing as a curator.
Lighthouse extend our sincerest sympathies to Michael’s friends and his young family.
