TWO DAYS OF ONLINE TALKS EXPLORING THE DIFFERENT WAYS SOUND CAN OCCUPY SPACE

Day 1: Paul Davies in conversation with Aneil Karia

The acclaimed sound designer Paul Davies will be joined by director Aneil Karia to talk about creating sound for the imagined spaces of cinema and, more specifically, discuss their collaboration on Aneil Karia's new film Surge (2020).

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Paul Davies

As sound designer for acclaimed Hollywood and Indie films, Paul is a long-term collaborator of director Lynne Ramsay, Steve McQueen and Stephen Frears, among others. His past projects include You Were Never Really Here, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Hunger.

Aneil Karia

As a short film director, Aneil took part in Lighthouse’s Guiding Lights 7 mentoring programme in 2015- 2016. This year, his first feature Surge (starring Ben Whishaw) has premiered at Sundance 2020, winning Special Jury Prize for Whishaw’s lead acting performance.

Three talks on how sound can occupy immersive space, architectural space and ritual space by artist Haroon Mirza, curator & scholar Dr Kersten Glandien and composer Lucy Harrison.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Haroon Mirza

Sound artist working at the intersections of fine art and electronic music, he structures the unglamorous beeps and buzzes of antiquated audio technology into beats and melodies, synchronizing these sounds with lights and moving pieces. Part music, part sculpture, part architectural intervention, Mirza “remixes” not just sounds but the spaces they inhabit. At The Space in Sound, he will be discussing sound for ritual and celebration in relation to his epic collaboration with Lighthouse – The Wave Epoch.

Haroon Mirza is represented by Lisson Gallery, and won The Silver Lion for Most Promising Artist at 54th Venice Biennale.

Kersten Glandien

Kersten Glandien is an author, scholar and curator specializing in the fields of SoundArts, Aesthetics and Experimental Music. Fluent in a range of musical genres, Glandien is famous for bringing British & German composers together for unconventional performances. In her talk, Glandien will examine the ways sound installed in public locations can influence our perception and make us aware of interactions with space.

Lucy Harrison

Lucy Harrison is a composer and sound designer. Her work focuses on interactive sound, using technology and electronics to create immersive soundscapes and interactive installations, and scores for film and theatre. She has PhD in composition from Royal Holloway, where she investigated interactive sound and music and audience engagement. Lucy is a lecturer on the Production and Games Academy courses at ACM (Academy for Contemporary Music) in London and Guildford where she teaches sound design, interactive audio and performance and technology. This talk will present the ways in which sound can be used in real and imagined spaces to guide interactive narratives.

The Space in Sound is inspired by the former Lighthouse programme The Sound of Story, an exploration of sound, music and storytelling, that ran 2014-16. Co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, part of Re-Imagine Europe. With support from Arts Council England.
