Taking as it’s starting point the work of Syrian architect Marwa al-Sabouni (co-director of Brighton Festival 2022) the third day of Structures of Community explores the role of built environments in shaping the people and cultures that use them.

How do public spaces and structures shape our sense of belonging and the narratives that define our social interactions? This symposium will consider how public art can make more diverse voices heard within the public realm and so shape our environment. Thinking about public art in relation to architectural, design and material environments, it will ask how these sources of culture can sustain and develop our communities through inclusive and engaged practices.

Structures of Community is a 3 day public art symposium and associated programme examining the role of social engaged art practice in public art including the launch of One Landscape, Many Views Public Art Strategy 2022-2032, a new public art strategy for Brighton & Hove. The programme is produced by Brighton CCA in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council and in collaboration with University of Brighton and Towner Eastbourne.

Expanding on how the new strategy will be implemented and upcoming new commissions for Brighton.

11.45am RESOLVE Collective

Ahead of their new commission and exhibition at Brighton CCA, the collective speak about their approach to working in and with the public realm, using local material cultures, design and architecture as a platform for collaboration and public engagement.

In conversation with the Brighton Station public art commission artist discussing place, architecture and what makes us feel we belong.

In discussion with Ben Roberts, Director, Brighton CCA about her practice and approach to making participatory art works in and for public spaces ahead of her exhibition at the gallery.

3.30 – 4.30pm Panel Discussion: Strategies for community engagement and care in public art practice

Considering how communities, artists and organisations can nurture and sustain creative practices and art works in public. Elisabeth Del Prete, Learning and Live Research Curator, UP Projects will be in dialogue with Alli Beddoes, Artistic Director, Lighthouse and Bobby Brown, freelance community worker and creative producer, and will discuss a range of models from the Constellations programme collaboration between UP Projects, Liverpool Biennale and Flat Time House to the Let’s Talk Public Art community consultation led by Lighthouse.

4.45pm CIRCA

Following a series of interventions in the symposium throughout the day, Josef O’Connor, Artistic Director of CIRCA, will discuss resourcing innovation in curatorial models for film and technology intervening in public space.

• This is an in-person event that will take place in the theatre space at Brighton CCA.
