Open Sessions #16 - Meet The Mentors
Audio Recording
Unable to attend our Open Sessions #16? No problem! Listen back to the session where we introduced the artist-mentors of our current cohort of Lighthouse Young Creatives (LYC) 2023/24. These mentors play a crucial role in guiding our LYC participants throughout their creative endeavours. They bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and practical wisdom to the table.
Open Sessions #16 gave an inspiring insight into the professional lives of our brilliant LYC mentors, who are:
- Sarah Brownlow - Photographer, skate coach and lead mentor
- Abraham Moughrabi - Producer, venue manager, and music mentor
- Maf’j Alvarez - Immersive media artist, creative technologist, and digital media mentor
- Callum Johnston - Director, producer, and filmmaking mentor
After a fabulous, exclusive live MPC/keys performance from Abraham Moughrabi of his latest unreleased musical composition, our mentors each gave pecha-kucha-style presentations about their successful careers in the arts. All four mentors delved into various aspects of creativity and making.
Sharing photos of key moments from their creative journeys, they reflected upon their motivations for embarking on their chosen vocations and all the lessons they’ve learned along the way. They also shared their insights on topics ranging from discovering your unique style and creative breakthroughs, to exploring alternative career paths and effectively managing multiple commitments.
After speaking individually, they then returned to the panel together along with Lighthouse’s Creative Communities Producer, Bobby Brown, who hosted a panel discussion and Q&A. This gave the mentors an opportunity to expand on what they had covered in their presentations and also gave the audience a chance to directly ask the mentors questions.
It was fascinating to discover the diverse experiences of our mentors, as well as some interesting parallels between their careers. All four expressed gratitude for managing to forge sustainable, meaningful careers doing what they love, and inspired the next generation of creatives to believe that - with the right mindset and support - this is indeed possible.
