We’re here to amplify unheard voices, not see them silenced, and that’s becoming increasingly difficult on X

In recent years, the digital world has changed in ways that have deeply impacted how we, as a charity, interact with our audiences. Social media platforms, once seen as powerful tools for giving everyone a voice—especially those who are often underrepresented—are increasingly becoming places where those voices are being drowned out. It’s made us examine our presence on X, and it's clear it is no longer the right space for us.

X used to be a lively platform where marginalised communities could connect, share their stories, and push for positive change. It’s become a much more hostile environment in recent years. Hate speech, harassment, and targeted attacks have made it unsafe for the people we support to exist.

The way X’s algorithms work has shifted, too. They now tend to highlight sensational and controversial content instead of meaningful, community-driven discussions. This change has pushed the voices we care about to the edges, making it harder for important conversations to be heard. We’re here to amplify these voices, not see them silenced, and that’s becoming increasingly difficult on X.

Despite promises to improve, X requires more help to successfully manage harmful content consistently. The uneven enforcement of community guidelines, especially protecting marginalised users, has shaken our trust in the platform. We can’t, in good conscience, continue to support a space that doesn’t safeguard the very people we’re here to help.

With new leadership taking over X, there’s been a lot of uncertainty about where the platform is headed. In practice, the focus on “free speech absolutism” has led to less emphasis on tackling hate speech and misinformation. This shift has further alienated the communities we care about, making X feel a less welcoming space.

Leaving X allows us to explore other platforms that better align with our values and reach the people we want to connect with. So we can invest in spaces that are more inclusive and harness meaningful community engagement. Whether through emerging social platforms, direct outreach, or other digital tools, we’re committed to finding ways to reach and engage our audiences.

At the core of this decision is our dedication to nurturing the next generation of diverse, creative talent and contributing to a richer cultural future. Every step we take as a charity needs to reflect this mission. As X continues to move in a direction that doesn’t match our values, we’re choosing to focus on empowering the communities we serve by finding more supportive and ethical platforms.

This decision is about our unwavering commitment to standing with those who are often silenced. Leaving X doesn’t mean we’re stepping back from digital advocacy, quite the opposite. We welcome new opportunities for genuine growth, connection and making an even bigger impact.
